Professor Jean-Briac LE GRAVEREND did his Ph.D. at ONERA (France) on Ni-based single crystal superalloys, more precisely on their mechanical responses when exposed to fast non-isothermal loading and his postdoc at CALTECH (California) on damping in piezoceramics. He opened the E2ML when he arrived at Texas A&M in October 2014. Quickly he was joined by grad and undergrad students and together they created an experimental and numerical lab dedicated to a better understanding of elasto-viscoplastic (time-dependent) deformations and damage.
To do so, Professor LE GRAVEREND utilizes a synergistic experimental and numerical approach mixing high-temperature thermo-mechanical loading tests such as creep and fatigue, characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and digital scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis with a multi-length and -time scale modeling such as ab-initio calculations (in collaboration with Prof. Tahir Cagin from MSEN), phase-field modeling, and crystal-plasticity finite-element (CPFE) simulations.
